Today the Health and Social Care Committee – in partnership with the Science and Technology Committee – questioned Sir Patrick Vallance, Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England and Dr Jenny Harries, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England as part of our joint Coronavirus: lessons learnt inquiry.
Given the current situation locally, I asked Sir Patrick Vallance and Professor Christopher Whitty what lessons had been learnt from the mass testing programme in Liverpool, and what strategy was therefore being put in place to ensure a successful roll out in Kent.
I also questioned the possibility of using mass testing to reduce quarantine periods, and enquired on the timeline for the ongoing pilots. As I have raised before, it would be better for individuals and for the economy if regular testing was used for contacts of confirmed cases rather than quarantine, and I am pleased this is the direction we are moving in.
