This is a hugely worrying and uncertain time for everyone, but if we pull together, we can get through this. Tackling this virus is a national effort and we must all play our role.
The first and most important thing you can do it to closely follow the Government public health advice. Everyone must now stay at home unless they need to buy food, exercise (once a day), provide help for the vulnerable or for work, if they cannot work from home. If too many people become seriously unwell at one time, the NHS will be unable to handle it - meaning more people are likely to die. These measures are vital to slow the spread of the disease.
My focus is on supporting local families, businesses and public services. I have written to every parish and town council, plus many voluntary organisations, advising on how I, the District Council and the County Council are coordinating the community response. I have signposted relevant government and NHS updates on my website, and both Sevenoaks District Council and Kent County Council, who are working round the clock to support the community, have also shared helpful links.
I have spoken to many worried businesses and charities. The Government financial support so far is extremely welcome, and world leading, but I know more is needed to support the self-employed. I am continuing to push as hard as I can for that to happen.
There are a number of you worried about your jobs and homes. There is relief available for your mortgage or to ensure your tenancy is secure for at least three months. Details of these are available on my website, but, if you need help, please get in touch.
All my thoughts go out to those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and their loved ones. I would also like to thank everyone across our amazing NHS who continue to go above and beyond to battle this pandemic as effectively as possible.
This virus will be defeated, but the coming months are going to be tough. I have already been heartened and impressed by the response of Sevenoaks. With courage, compassion and community spirit we will get through this outbreak.
At this time of national emergency: stay home, protect our NHS and save lives.
