As of Monday, 1,972 children from across Kent were living with a foster family, and 55 of those are here within Sevenoaks. The placements can occur for a variety of reasons. It could be that a child’s parent is suffering with a short-term illness or another temporary problem within the family. Some children may have witnessed domestic violence or have a parent struggling with depression or drug and alcohol abuse. Others may have been abused or neglected. Each child’s circumstances and needs are unique; however, the fostering network is there for them all. It provides a safe, secure and nurturing 'family' environment, for both the short and long-term, and allows children to keep in contact with their own families if they wish and it is in their best interests.
To mark Fostering Fortnight, I was privileged last week to be joined by several local foster carers to hear about their experiences. During our discussion, I was blown away by their generosity and passion in providing the best possible home and family life to the children they look after. To hear that many of them were still in touch with children they had fostered years ago, and who are now living happy and successful adult lives.
It was great to hear the positive feedback about Kent County Council’s work, including their ambassador scheme to ensure that carers’ voices are heard, and their policy for continuing to support children in care over the age of 18.
However, it was also clear that fostering faces challenges, and I want to make sure that local carers have as much support from the system as possible. At the meeting we had some really insightful conversations about the allowances for foster carers, respite breaks, and the impact of court delays. And, this week I have written to the Children’s Minister, Claire Coutinho MP, to share the feedback and suggestions.
I was left truly inspired after meeting some of our local foster families. They are incredible people, who make an enormous contribution to our society. If you would like to know more about how to get involved, please do visit https://www.kentfostering.co.uk/ for more details or call 03000 420 002.
