Today I spoke in the Backbench Business Debate on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
This scheme has supported 12,200 people across Sevenoaks and Swanley, and for many notable local businesses, including the The Stag Sevenoaks and The Bricklayers Arms in Chipstead, it has offered a lifeline through an exceptionally difficult time.
I raised in detail during my speech, the support the scheme has had for women, who we know have been disproportionately impacted by the lockdown – especially as women were more likely to work in the sectors that had to completely shut-down, such as hospitality.
There can be no doubt Government intervention has saved women’s jobs during crisis, however as we must now look forward and focus on retraining, creating new jobs, and maintaining flexibility so that women can return to jobs which are sustainable and future proof.
