On Friday I met with Sevenoaks District Council Leader Julia Thornton. It is vital to have a great working relationship with the local district council, and I offer as much support as I can when the council are seeking grants (such as the finance for the east/west cycle route through Sevenoaks) and I also put forward their case to Ministers with regard local government.
It was good to hear from Julia that the Vine Public Space Protection Order consultation is going well. Alongside the announcement last week that nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, will be categorised as a class C drug and made illegal by the end of the year – steps both nationally and locally are being taken to stamp out antisocial behaviour. The Sevenoaks District Council consultation closes at midnight Sunday 24 September, so please do make sure you have your say.
On Friday I also held one of my regular MP surgeries – which are meetings for constituents who wish to discuss their concerns or issues with me. Last week topics included Capital Gains Tax, Entrepreneurs Relief, small boats and support for small businesses. If you would like to join one of my future sessions, please do email my office at [email protected], setting out what you would like to discuss.
I also spent Saturday morning meeting residents in Swanley. It was great to hear first-hand from residents the difference we have been able to make locally since the last election. The direct fast train through Otford and Swanley, to London Bridge and terminating at London Charing Cross was mentioned many times, as well as the benefits locally of rebuilding Orchards Academy and the funding secured for a new SEND school – which will benefit students from across the whole constituency. Seeing campaigns, I have led on locally delivering for local people is one the many reasons why I love this job.
And finally, with Christmas now less than 15 weeks away, I have this week launched my annual Christmas Card competition for 2023. The winning design will be printed on the front of the Christmas cards I send out in December. And, The Stag has very kindly donated prizes, including tickets to see the Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime this winter for the winner, and cinema tickets for the runner ups. All local children, up to 12 years old, are invited to take part. Designs may be inspired by either their favourite festive local activities, places or stories. Given the high standard of previous entries, I can’t wait to see the amazing artwork of our talented young people. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 31st October and for further details – alongside the entry form – please visit: https://www.lauratrott.org.uk/christmas-card-competition Good luck!
