Not content with causing extra cost to hard-pressed families by extending the ULEZ boundary, Labour London Mayor Sadiq Khan is now looking to pile on costs with the scrapping of the one-day travelcard.
As many of you will know, the travelcard allows unlimited travel around the capital on public transport. And, for many years it has proven to be vital for so many across Sevenoaks and Swanley as it allows us to buy our train and tube travel together.
Many local residents and families rely on this scheme to make trips into London more accessible, and the plans to scrap it could see the price of travel to and from the capital rise by 33% from our local stations. This is simply unacceptable.
Once again, it is non-London residents, those with no democratic means of opposing his plans, that are being punished by these cash raising initiatives in order to make up for the Mayor’s poor leadership and financial mismanagement of Transport for London.
Last month, I was delighted to welcome Richard Holden MP, Minister for Transport in London, to Otford station, where we were able to discuss the impact of these proposals with local campaigners. In the discussions, it was made clear how important the one-day travelcard is locally, and that local people are opposed to the proposal.
I will continue to voice my opposition in Parliament, and keep all residents updated with developments. I know how vital affordable transport links are for residents and I will do everything I can to convince the Labour Mayor to reverse these outrageous proposals.
On a more festive note, a small reminder that my annual Christmas Cade Competition will close on 31st October.
The competition is open for all local children, up to 12 years old, to create a design for my annual Christmas card. Entries may be inspired by pupils’ favourite local activities, places or stories during the festive season. And, the winning entry will then be printed on the front of the Christmas cards I send out in December.
This year, The Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks has also very kindly donated prizes for the winner and runners up, with family tickets for Jack and the Beanstalk at the Stag Theatre Sevenoaks, or a film at the Stage Cinema Sevenoaks up for grabs.
For more details please visit my website: https://www.lauratrott.org.uk/christmas-card-competitionCompleted where the entry form can be downloaded.
Good luck and I can’t wait to see the amazing artwork of our talented young people.
