There has been much unfolding in politics over the last week, however, admits all of it I was delighted to arrange and host a visit from Sevenoaks Youth Council to Parliament.
During the visit, the seven members of the youth council received a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Then I met them all in one of the Committee Rooms in Portcullis House, where I spoke to them about my role as an MP and answered their questions. I was very impressed with their observations and insights, and we had discussions ranging from my background to the need to tackling fast fashion and promote sustainability.
Since its conception by the Sevenoaks Town Council in 2009, the Sevenoaks Youth Council has become increasingly involved in setting up events for young people locally, as well as discussing important local issues. They give a voice to our local young people, and ensure they are heard by those who are elected and can implement change. If you know someone who would like to get involved please visit: https://www.sevenoaksyouthcouncil.com/
Young people’s engagement with both local and national politics is so important, and something I am keen to encourage. The next generation have a wealth of knowledge and understanding that can be extremely helpful to the decision makers in government. And it is crucial to engage the next generation of speakers, activists, and professionals.
I am always pleased to hear when schools have visited Parliament and taken the opportunity to work with Parliament’s Education Centre which specifically tailors visit for schools and young people. If you are a local teacher and would like to find out more, please visit https://learning.parliament.uk/ or contact my office at [email protected] who will be able to advise and point you in the right direction.
